Internships and Field Work


Internships are a great way to gain experience and explore career opportunities. While most are unpaid, some offer academic credit.

First, visit the internship section of The National Association for the Practice of Anthropology web site for good general information on internships and links to several internship programs. Next, visit the links below for information on internships, volunteer opportunities, and seasonal employment.

Federal Organizations

National Park Service - From the NPS career site, visit the links to Seasonal Employment and Volunteer Information. Opportunities range from volunteer positions in visitor centers to seasonal employment as a park ranger. Check with the Denver Service Center and regional offices for possible volunteer or intern positions working with cultural resources. For museum exhibit positions, check with the Harpers Ferry center.

National Institute of Health (NIH) - - The NIH Summer Employment Program for Non-Scientific Positions selects students to work in administrative and computer support positions in administrative organizations and research laboratories.

Office of Community Planning and Development - (HUD) - HUD offers internships through the Volunteer Service Program. Internships are related to a student's academic program and allow undergraduate and graduate students to explore career options while developing personal and professional skills. Internships are unpaid and may include academic credit for work performed during the internship.

U.S. Department of State - - This site includes links to information on student employment programs at the Department of State. Paid and unpaid positions include opportunities in Washington, D.C., and international locations.

General

Earthwatch Institute
The mission of Earthwatch Institute is to promote the sustainable conservation of our natural resources and cultural heritage by creating partnerships among scientists, the general public, educators, and businesses.

Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities - - This site, hosted by the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, lists international and domestic field work opportunities. Note that these volunteer positions may require participants to pay a fee and to cover their own travel costs.

Southwestern Archaeology (SWA) - - A list of current career, temporary, and volunteer opportunities in archaeology projects in the southwestern states.

Tennessee Valley Authority - (TVA) - TVA interns work in laboratories, nuclear, fossil and hydro plants, customer service centers, and corporate offices throughout the seven-state TVA region. Internships are paid.

Internship Database Museum Resource Board - - This site lets you search for internship programs in museums.

Smithsonian Internship Opportunities - - Each of the Smithsonian's museums and many of its research institutes and offices offer internships. This site includes information on the programs and how to apply.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Internships - - The Museum's internship program allows interns to participate in hands-on projects and work with Holocaust scholars and museum professionals

International Organizations

World Health Organization - - Information on internships at WHO. Unpaid internships are available in health programs and some administrative areas, such as translation. While interns are generally students in health-related disciplines, other disciplines are considered as appropriate. Minimum age is 18 years. Duration is six weeks to three months.

World Bank Knowledge Intern Program - - Information on the Knowledge Intern Program of the World Bank Group, offered to both undergraduate and graduate students.
