Retirement for Chimpanzees? A team of Japanese geologists has reported that the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu, the fortress city of the Incas, is slipping at a rate of about 0.4 inches per month. At this rate a catastrophic landslide could destroy all of the city. The site is built upon rubble from an earlier landslide and lies near an active fault. The government has been considering plans for controlling access to the site as well as other steps to preserve it. This finding may require substantially more elaborate preservation measures.
