The Middle Kingdom emerged in 2040 B.C., following a century of unrest after the collapse of the power of the Old Kingdom pharaohs around 2150 B.C.

Tombs to ward off thieves:

During the Middle Kingdom, the Egyptians continued to build pyramids but on a much smaller scale than in the Old Kingdom.

Mountainsides fashioned into tombs:

New forms of tombs also were introduced during the Middle Kingdom.
