Abiola, Mashood The apparent winner of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election of 1993; he died in prison of unexplained causes five years later.

AG Yoruba based political party in post-independence Nigeria
ANPP All Nigeria Middle Belt People’s Party, the leading opposition party in Nigeria today
Awolo, Obafemin A leading Igbo politicians and head of Biafra during the civil war in Nigeria in the last 1960s.
Azikiwe, Nnamdi The leading Yoruba politician in post-independence Nigeria.
Babangida, Ibrahim Military ruler of Nigeria in the 1990s and potential candidate in 1997.
Balewam Tafawa One of the leaders of early independent Nigeria; killed in the first coup.

UPN United Party of Nigeria; the main Yoruba party in Nigeria’s second republic.
World Bank A major international lending agency for development projects based in Washington.
Yoruba The leading ethnic group in southwestern Nigeria.
