Creative Editing

Chapter 12

Exercise 6

6. The safety and security department at your university would like you to prepare an informational brochure on drinking. It is up to you to research the topic, define the target audience and determine the desired communication outcome. The format of the brochure is your choice. Complete this task in one week.

a. After completing the above steps, prepare a draft of the brochure concept for approval by the safety and security office. You may assume that the concept document will be sent as an attachment to a letter from you to the department head. Complete this task in one week.

b. On the basis of the comments you received from the instructor who reviewed your concept document, prepare a draft of the brochure copy. Complete this task in one week.

c. Exchange your draft brochure copy with draft brochure copy prepared by a classmate. Edit the classmate's copy for style and content. Prepare a preliminary design and layout for the brochure. Be sure the layout indicates the width of margins, columns and gutters, as well as placement of the body copy, headlines you have written and art. Special graphic considerations such as bold or italic type, drop caps, screens, reverses, rules and boxes should also be indicated on the layout. If actual art is unavailable, you should attach a typed, detailed description of the suggested art. A style sheet that includes your recommended type font and sizes for headlines, subheads, cutlines and body copy should be incorporated on the layout or attached. The preliminary layout should be prepared on dummy sheets that are the actual size of the brochure pages or proportional. The edited body copy and the preliminary design and layout should be returned to the classmate when completed. This task should be completed in one week.

d. On the basis of the copy editing and preliminary design and layout prepared by your classmate, prepare the final camera-ready pages of your brochure. Complete this task in one week.
