The Case: Corporate Credo

Imagine that a vice president has asked for your help in developing a corporate credo or ethics code for the organization that employs you. Locate two professional codes of ethics that apply to your field or to fields closely allied with yours; professors in your major department and reference librarians can help you with this. Then, in your memo to the vice president, do one of the following things, depending on your instructor's directions:

  1. Evaluate the two codes, with the aim of helping shape the vice president's thinking about the code for your organization.

  2. Using the codes you have researched and your own sense of what an ethics code should do, identify the topics that your organization's code should cover, tell why, and discuss some of the major issues that should be considered under each topic.

  3. Using the codes you have researched and your own sense of what an ethics code should do, propose a code that you have developed for your organization.

Whichever alternative you choose, be sure to consider all the various stakeholders in actions taken by your employer. If you work for a large and diverse company, you might choose to recommend an ethics code only for the part of the business in which you are employed.
