Chapter 10: Ending a Communication
Extra Exercise Online 10.4

The goal of this exercise is to help you learn some ways you can apply Chapter 10's guidelines for ending a workplace communication.

The Assignment

Analyze this ending of the communication, in this case, the ending of a recipe compilation, "Something on the Light Side", in terms of the guidelines discussed in Chapter 10:

Guideline 2: Repeat your main point.
Guideline 3: Summarize your key point.
Guideline 4: Refer to a goal stated earlier in your communication.
Guideline 5: Focus on a key feeling.
Guideline 6: Tell your readers how to get assistance or more information.
Guideline 7: Tell your readers what to do next.
Guideline 8: Identify any further study that is needed.
Guideline 9: Follow applicable social conventions.

Your Assignment

First, indicate which of Chapter 10's Guidelines 2-9 are used in this ending. Where is each used?

Second, revise the ending by adding content consistent with each of the other guidelines IF the addition would improve the ending.

Third, identify the guidelines that, if followed, would reduce the effectiveness of this particular beginning. Explain why it would be counterproductive to apply them to this beginning.
