How does the English Testing Center work?

The English Testing Center is an online testing, tutorial, and course management tool powered by BCA/iLrn. Instructors log into www.ilrn.com to set up their course information, create tests, assign the tests to students, and have the students submit the test electronically. All student responses are recorded in a central gradebook, which instructors can use to track student progress.

For more information on BCA/iLrn, contact your local sales rep or visit www.ilrn.com.

What kind of tests are in the English Testing Center?

The English Testing Center contains two sets of tests: Diagnostic Tests taken from the printed Diagnostic Test Package to accompany the Harbrace Handbooks (ISBN 0838406475) and Practice Tests on common English topics. The Diagnostic Tests can be used to assess the student's ability in a given area, while the Review Tests can be used to give the student additional practice.

Can I create my own tests?

Instructors can use the English Testing Center as a test bank, and can easily pull together questions from the Diagnostic Tests and Practice Tests into a new test.

For example, a student may be having trouble with punctuation. An instructor can use BCA/iLrn's "Assessment Builder" to create a test for the student using individual questions from the tests on apostrophes, commas, and semicolons. Instructors can re-order the questions in the test, add their own questions and answers, or modify the content of each test to offer class-specific feedback to the student. The instructor can then assign the test to the student within BCA/iLrn, or print out the test and hand it to the student.

For more information on creating tests in BCA/iLrn, visit www.ilrn.com and click on "Testing Tour" in the lower left corner of the screen.

How can I integrate the English Testing Center into my course?

After the student submits a test, they see feedback based on their responses. The feedback contains page references to the Harbrace Handbook, Writer's Harbrace Handbook, and Brief Handbook, so that students can refer to their Handbooks for further instruction.

Instructors using other Wadsworth English books can use a "general edition" of the English Testing Center, which does not contain references to the Handbooks.

A set of tests with references to the Wadsworth Handbook and Writer's Harbrace Brief will be available in summer 2004.
