3.9.1 Use italics to indicate titles of books, periodicals, newsletters, and newspapers.

EXAMPLES

Edgerton’s work in stroboscopy and electronic flash photography is illustrated in Moments of Vision.

Aviation Week and Space Technology is an important trade publication.

3.9.2 Use italics to indicate material that deserves emphasis.

EXAMPLE

Each type of anesthesia available has specific risks. General anesthesia holds the greatest risk for the patient. . . .

In such a discussion, each type of anesthesia could be italicized as it is introduced.

Emphasis through italics should be used cautiously or it loses its effectiveness.

3.9.3 Use italics to indicate legal citations. The v. (for versus) may be italic or roman, as long as it is consistent.
