Other fragments are created when a writer begins but doesn’t finish
an idea. For example:
Wild ducks harbor influenza viruses in their intestinal tracts, causing
no illness in the ducks. Spread
influenza to many other species.
The fragment can be
corrected when the writer completes the idea by adding a subject.
Because ducks migrate great distances, they spread influenza
to many other species. Ducks spread influenza to many other species
during
their migration.
Some fragments are created by carelessness. Others are caused by a
writer’s
indecision. The following examples illustrate both situations.
Judging
from recent radar scans. Venus appears to have mountain ranges similar
to earth’s Appalachians and Himalayas. Parallel
mountains formed by horizontal movements of the crust.
The first fragment
is
a phrase that should be part of the sentence. The second fragment can either
be connected to the sentence or have a verb added to make it a sentence itself:
Judging from recent radar scans, Venus appears to have mountain
ranges similar to earth’s Appalachians and Himalayas, parallel
mountains formed by horizontal movements of the crust.
Judging from recent radar
scans, Venus appears to have mountain ranges similar to earth’s
Appalachians and Himalayas. Parallel mountains are formed by horizontal
movements of the crust.
