What would it have been like to live as a Puritan colonist in Massachusetts Bay? Or an African American sharecropper during the Depression? These American simulations will let you discover for yourself the hardships, dilemmas, and decisions that individuals faced. You will make choices based in historical context, and your decisions will have consequences - some good, some not so good. By experiencing problems and crisis that faced those who helped to shape the United States, you will learn about the "cause-and-effect" in history, and how different choices could lead to different outcomes.

History is not static; it is created by real people, making real choices in their everyday lives. You are creating history as you live and breathe. These simulations will place you in the past, so that you can better understand how individuals similar to yourself made their own decisions. There are no "right" or "wrong" answers, rather each choice provides a different experience and its own outcome. At the conclusion of each path of the simulations, there will be "Questions for Reflection" as well as multiple-choice questions covering the material presented in the simulation. You will be able to email your answers to your professors if instructed to do so. In addition, there are numerous web links within each simulation that will allow you to explore some topics in more depth. These links will open in separate windows so that you can return to the simulation without interruption.

By combining these simulations with your textbook and classroom instruction, you will gain a more complete understanding of the flow of American history. You will also experience the dynamics of history as if you were there. Click on one of the links below to run the simulation of your choice.
