Archie A software search engine used to search FTP sites. Archie uses key words to locate specific information.

Boolean Logic Operators From the modern logic system devel-oped by the 19th century English mathematician George Boole. The operators can be used to limit or define subsets of larger sets.

E-mail Electronic mail, a system that allows data and messages to be transferred from one computer to another through computer network connections. E-mail is sent through the Internet to an e-mail address, usually in the form of name@serveraddress.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Sites on the public Internet that allow the user to find information or files and subsequently transfer them to his or her own computer.

Gopher A system, developed at the University of Minnesota, for organizing data on the public Internet. Gopher sites usually present their sites in simple lists, called menus. Selecting one item from the menu may lead to another, lower-level menu. Most colleges and universities maintain their own Gopher server, which usually provides access to other Gophers and sometimes the entire Internet.

Internet An open connection of networks that enables com-puters to communicate directly with one another, usually through the telephone system.

Links Connections on the World Wide Web that allow the user to "jump" or "surf" from one Internet site to another.

Search Engines Software that has been developed to perform searches on the Internet. In combination with browser software, they enable the user to locate specific Internet sites.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) The address or location of each individual site on the Internet. A URL usually begins with a prefix signifying the transfer format, followed by a reference to the server computer or system, which is then followed by the directory and file where the resource is located.

Usenet Usenet newsgroups are electronic bulletin boards that allow people around the world to communicate with each other through the Internet. Most Internet newsgroups are unmoderated, that is, every message sent appears in the newsgroup discussion.

Veronica A software search engine used to search Gopher systems. Veronica uses key words to locate specific Gophers.

World Wide Web A system of resources that is available to computers connected to the public Internet. Web sites are accessible using special brows-ing software that enables the user to display text, images, sounds, movies, other objects, or to link to other web sites. The connec-tions are configured to allow the visitor to move freely from one source computer, or "server," to another.
