South Africa: from Apartheid to Democracy

The large majority of South Africa's population is black. Yet, until the mid-1990s, a small minority of whites of British and Dutch descent imposed apartheid, a system in which blacks were segregated and denied most of the rights enjoyed by the country's white citizens. But democracy and majority rule finally did come to South Africa. What was the nature of the apartheid system? What combination of factors brought about its demise?
