The Reformation

Unhappy with the doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, Martin Luther launched a crusade in 1517 designed to rescue Christianity--to personalize it and place its salvation within the reach of every individual without the need for priestly intervention. The subsequent Reformation brought war, both a war of words between theologians, priests, and church officials, and a war of arms in much of Europe over whether the official religion in various countries would be Catholicism or a form of Protestantism. What were the major reasons for the Reformation? What were some of its important characteristics and outcomes?
