LATIN AMERICA

Latin America's Economic Growth and Its Consequences

At the behest on international lending institutions making them new loans, most Latin American countries have sought to bring a greater degree of free-market operations to their economies and also to control government spending. Evaluate the economic and social results of these reforms. Have they been good for Latin America? Have they benefited some groups at the expense of others?

Chile in Transition, 1970 to the present

Socialist Salvador Allende was chosen as Chile's president in 1970 in free and fair elections. Many Chileans--especially those of the upper classes--and also the government of President Richard Nixon opposed Allende and plotted his downfall. General Augusto Pinochet staged a bloody coup in 1973 and instituted a repressive regime that did manage to foster economic growth. Chile returned to democratic politics in the 1990s. Investigate and evaluate the political, economic, and social aspects this turbulent period, and discuss possible futures for Chile.
