VE Day: Day the war in Europe was won by the Allies; the day that Germany surrendered was May 7, 1945.

VJ Day: September 2, 1945; celebrated as Victory over Japan Day.

Vietnamization: Policy whereby the South Vietnamese were to assume more of the military burdens of the war. It was expected that this transfer of responsibility eventually would allow the United States to withdraw.

vagrant: A person who wanders from place to place and has no occupation or visible means of support.

vamp: A female portrayed in many early movies. These women acted the part of vampires who thrived on the blood and death of men.

vestry: A group of prominent men who managed the lay affairs of the local Anglican church, including the choice of minister.

vice-admiralty: These courts dealt with a restricted royal jurisdiction and courts dealt with naval and merchant ships and their crews, and cases involving parliamentary regulation of trade. They offered few of the protections normally allowed under the English legal system, such as trial by jury.

virtual: The English concept that it was not necessary for everyone representation to vote. Representation was afforded only to those who could vote. Members of Parliament represented the entire empire, not just a local constituency or a group of voters. According to this theory, settlers had the same representation as British subjects within Great Britain or other portions of the empire.
