Yankeephobia: Strong or unreasonable dislike of Americans, referred to as Yankees; fairly widespread in Latin America at one time.

Young American: A group of young members of the Democratic Party who Movement were interested in territorial expansion in the 1840s.

yankee: A Dutch word that originally meant something like "land pirate."

yellow journalism: A type of journalism where stories were embellished with titillating details when the true reports did not seem sensational enough. This type of writing catered to a hunger for "real-life" accounts.

yellow-dog contracts: Written pledges by employees promising not to join a union while they were employed.

yeoman: A farmer who works his own farm. Jefferson considered them to be the most important group in the democratic republic.
