Developing Historical Skills
The Analysis exercises provide
students with experience that will help them develop their skills as historians,
by:
- Distinguishing primary
from secondary documents
- Distinguishing the time
when a document was created from the time to which it applies
- Identifying and classifying
the data in a document
- Characterizing the perspective
or outlook of a documents creator and of persons portrayed in
documents as well as the students own perspective on each
document
- Locating a thesis or main
point in a document
- Comparing documents
- Assembling the analyses
of individual documents into reviews of groups of documents
- Identifying gaps in evidence
topics for which evidence is desirable but not available
- Stating the students
own thesis or main point
- Composing different types
of historical essays a historical narrative differs from a historiographical
essay or the write-up of a research agenda.
- Collecting and presenting
examples to illustrate the argument in an essay
