Developing Historical Skills

The Analysis exercises provide students with experience that will help them develop their skills as historians, by:

  • Distinguishing primary from secondary documents
  • Distinguishing the time when a document was created from the time to which it applies
  • Identifying and classifying the data in a document
  • Characterizing the perspective or outlook of a document’s creator and of persons portrayed in documents — as well as the student’s own perspective on each document
  • Locating a thesis or main point in a document
  • Comparing documents
  • Assembling the analyses of individual documents into reviews of groups of documents
  • Identifying gaps in evidence — topics for which evidence is desirable but not available
  • Stating the student’s own thesis or main point
  • Composing different types of historical essays — a historical narrative differs from a historiographical essay or the write-up of a research agenda.
  • Collecting and presenting examples to illustrate the argument in an essay
