Bush v. Gore, 2000
The 2000 presidential election was closely fought all the way to the end. Al Gore won the popular vote, but George W. Bush won the electoral college vote after the United States Supreme Court essentially awarded him the disputed electoral votes of Florida. Investigate all aspects of this election. What were the two main candidates’ stands on the issues? Exactly what was the nature of the voting irregularities in Florida and the dispute over them in the weeks after the election? Why was the Supreme Court ruling so controversial? Did the Green Party’s Ralph Nader take enough votes away from Al Gore to put George W. Bush in the White House? What does the disputed outcome of this election indicate about democracy in the United States?
