Participation Activity 2
Writing a letter to the editor is a time-honored method of using the media to sway public opinion.
1. First, pick the topic. It should be timely and interesting, and one about which you have knowledge and a strong opinion.
2. Compose your double-spaced letter on the computer; make sure there are no grammar or spelling errors. Keep your writing tight, clear, and to the point, and be sure it fits within the length limits of your target publication.
3. Facts are important, and so is your opinion of right and wrong—what should and should not be.
4. Most publications allow for submission of letters via e-mail. Make sure you send it to the appropriate person.
5. Was your letter printed? If so, how did it feel to see it in print?
6. Did any readers subsequently write letters responding to yours? What did they say?
