Vladimir Putin

Since taking over from Boris Yeltsin in 2000, Vladimir Putin has tried to take Russia in new directions. He has sought to consolidate more political power in the central government with considerable success, but often at the expense of democracy and freedom of expression. He has also kept good, though occasionally uneven, relations with the West. What have been some of the major challenges faced by Putin and how has he dealt with them? What are the current issues he faces? How effective has he been as Russia’s leader?
