Who Cares What Bono Thinks?
Who Cares What Bono Thinks?
This scenario not only presents the question of the obligation of wealthier nations to developing countries in an era of globalization, it also showcases one of the realities of the modern age: governments are no longer the only players on the world stage. Nongovernmental entities have become a reality in international affairs. International organizations have played a key role in the world over the past fifty years. In this age of the glorification of celebrity and non-stop twenty-four hour news, it is hardly surprising that a rock star with considerable wealth and influence, as well as an intense interest in global affairs, would step forward and seek to shape policy.
Do you believe that Bono has a legitimate role to play in this matter? Can you think of any other individuals (musicians, actors, industrialists) who could play a similar role? Is it a matter of concern that Bono’s voice carries more weight than the countless millions of other individuals who care about the state of the world? Can the argument be made that Bono is doing what so many of our leaders have failed to do? Is Bono a meddlesome dilettante or a visionary activist?
Assume a situation in which Bono formed a foundation and convinced his friends in the entertainment world to contribute millions of dollars, and that this Bono Foundation spent hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of Africa. Would you regard the development of the Bono Foundation as a positive or negative? Is this the way that Bono should attempt to help Africa, rather than trying to lobby governments around the world? Is there any difference between Bono lobbying government to support Africa and Bono contributing his money directly to African nations?
Can you think of any other issues that are not being addressed effectively by governments around the world and that should become the object of involvement by individuals such as Bono? Is there any way for average people to make a difference on these kinds of issues, or is this exclusively the domain of millionaire rock stars?
