The American Invasion and Occupation of Iraq
Iraq became a prime target of President George W. Bush in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. President Bush decided to proceed with the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 despite a lack of support on the UN Security Council and in the world in general. The military campaign led to quick subjugation of most military resistance. But once the occupation began, questions arose about why President Bush ordered the invasion, and elements within Iraq began guerrilla operations against the United States and Britain. What events and policies led to the confrontation between Iraq and the United States? What reasons did the Bush administration give for the invasion? What does the immediate future hold for Iraq and the Americans who occupy it? What are the potential positive and negative ramifications of the invasion?
