The Future: Issues and Directions

Living in Candlestick Park

2. What will happen to sovereignty, according to Gaddis? What effects might this have?

3. Why is the economy, both domestic and international, an important variable in determining the future?

4. What does Gaddis predict about political behavior? How might that affect the future?

5. What prospect does Gaddis see for the return of empires? What could trigger the creation of a new empire?

6. Gaddis makes an analogy between the rise and fall of empires and the birth and death of stars. Is this valid? Are there unchanging laws governing the interactions of people and the political entities they create, or could the nature of these interactions change over time? If they do change over time, what could cause them to do so?
