Critical Thinking Questions
1. If a colonial power was primarily interested in trade, what would be the advantages to establishing only coastal enclaves, as opposed to seeking access or control to large parts of the interior?
2. Find a contemporary map of India and neighboring countries. What two countries now contain much of the Muslim population of colonial India? What is the geographical relationship of Assam to India?
3. Search in your textbook, in the library, and on the Internet for information on the recent history of the Punjab region. What do separatist Sikhs demand, and why? What has been the response of the Indian government? What have been some of the important events in Punjab over the last 20 or so years?
4. Search in your textbook, in the library, and on the Internet for information on the conflict between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir region. What are the central issues of the dispute? What has been the history of conflict between India and Pakistan over the region? What recent events have occurred? What is the prognosis for the future?
