The Division of Poland
The
Division of Poland, 1772, 1793, 1795
For a map of the divisions, go to http://www.polishroots.com/genpoland/polhistory.htm.
1. What are the differing reactions of the three monarchs to the seizure of Polish
territory? Which one most obviously states a desire to increase power?
2. How would a realist interpret the divisions of Poland? What about a liberal idealist?
3. Poland had a weak central government. Is this an indication that a strong central
government is necessary for the survival of a state?
4. Note that by the late eighteenth century many of Europe’s small states had disappeared.
Is this a lesson that small states don’t survive in the long run? Or have the rules
of the international system changed over the last 300 years? What were the rules in
1750? What are the rules now? What role has the geographical spread of democracy and
its accompanying ideals played in changing the rules? What about the growth of international
trade and economic interdependence? How about the growing sense of ecological interdependence?
