German Peasant Revolts
The
Twelve Articles of the Swabian Peasants
These demands came from peasants involved in the Great Peasant War of 1524-1525, which
raged in the German Provinces. Martin Luther opposed the revolt.
1. What types of grievances did the peasants present in the Twelve Articles? Who are
the targets of the grievances?
2. In what ways do the grievances invoke Protestant themes, at least as peasants might
have understood them?
3. Is it significant that the peasants came together to formally write these grievances?
Why? What does this suggest about the power of the peasants?
