Examine the armor and protection of the hoplite soldiers. What parts of their bodies are least protected? 2. Why were arrows relatively ineffective against hoplite soldiers? 3. Hoplite soldiers wore relatively heavy armor. Why would such armor be an advantage when fighting in a phalanx, but perhaps not when fighting in the open, outside of a phalanx? 4. Hoplite soldiers gained some power within the polis. Does it make sense for a country to allow its soldiers to participate in decision making? Would they perhaps be less likely to support war? Does justice require that they be allowed to participate in decisions that could result in their death or injury?
