Realism
Hans Morgenthau was the primary proponent of realism in the twentieth century, and
it was his seminal work Politics Among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace
(1948) that established realism as the predominant paradigm of international relations.
The "Six Principles of Political Realism" summarize the most important aspects
of Morgenthau’s views.
Six Principles of Political
Realism
1. In what ways is Morgenthau being a political scientist, with the emphasis on the
science?
2. How does Morgenthau view human nature? How does human nature affect international
politics?
3. What does Morgenthau mean by "interest defined in terms of power"? What
does this concept entail for international relations?
4. What does Morgenthau assert about the motives of foreign policy makers and the
actual foreign policy they make? How does he support this assertion?
5. What does Morgenthau think about the role morals should play in the formulation
of foreign policy? How does he support his case with examples?
6. In what ways are these principles of realism relevant to today’s international
relations? How can you use them to explain recent foreign policy decisions by American
presidents?
