We are finally ready to select or develop our specific operations. It is always easier to use an existing measure rather than develop a new one. Be sure to check the literature for measures that have been successfully used in similar research. There are a number of good resources for selecting existing psychological measures.

To measure PTSD, we want to use existing measures. A review of the current literature identifies the Impact of Events Scale as a widely used self-report measure of PTSD with demonstrated reliability and validity. You will also ask the participant to name a close relative who will also complete the Impact of Events Scale. Finally, licensed psychologists will administer the PTSD component of the Revised Psychiatric Diagnostic Interview Schedule in order to obtain a diagnosis of PTSD that meets DSM-IV criteria.

While the final step yields our operational definition, all of the steps are necessary to develop the best definition possible for the construct. We will address specific considerations for developing operational definitions in a separate workshop.

Now you try it. On the next pages complete all of the steps required to specify the construct of anxiety.
