In this section, we evaluate how the DV is measured. The IV (symbolic/nonsymbolic reasoning) is operationalized in the study procedures. In this case, the DV is "task success". Task success is defined as whether or not the child was able to retrieve the troll doll from its hiding place. A summary score was created that indicated the percentage of successful retrievals across the four trials.
