- Experiments are investigations in which the researcher directly manipulates at least one variable.
- In experiments, you manipulate the IV and measure its impact on the DV.
- When designing your study, cover as much of the range in your IV as possible.
- Sometimes we are interested in subject variables - variables that cannot be manipulated by the investigator. We have less confidence in our conclusions when we cannot manipulate the IV.
- Confounds are other variables associated with the IV that can also explain your DV. Eliminate confounds when possible.
