  • Logical structure and visual clarity are essential features of good survey design.

  • The most desirable sequencing of items depends of the purpose of the survey. Always put more sensitive questions in the middle or at the end of the survey to allow rapport/trust to develop.

  • Open-ended questions at the end of a survey are good for obtaining information you may have missed in more structured questions.

  • Strong visual presentation tells the participant that you care about what you are doing.

  • Directions and questions in a survey must be clear, and response choices must be obvious.

  • Make sure that the words used are appropriate for the education and language of the participants.
