Calculating the Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r)

2. The Formula
The correlation coefficient is calculated based on the following formula that uses Z scores:

This means:

  • Calculate everybody's Z score.
  • Multiply each Zx by its corresponding Zy.
  • Add up the result (multiplicand) for everyone.
  • Divide by the number of people or observations.
