How Do We Calculate F?
The F-ratio is calculated by using rather complex-looking formulas - you will find them in your statistics book. However, the idea behind the test is simple. F-ratio is based on the general linear model of a score.

The idea of a Linear Model
[X = μ+α+Σ]

Your score can be considered as a MAP to you.

  1. Start at the mean of everybody, independent of groups.
  2. Go to your group mean.
  3. Go to your individual score.

This MAP can be considered as a sum:

Your score =
Population Mean + [Distance to Your Group] + Distance to You
