CHARTing Your Course:

Taking Your First-Year Seminar to the Next Level
Facilitator: Dr. Constance Staley, author of Wadsworth's Teaching College Success

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
According to research, today's students ARE a new breed. Increasingly, research suggests we can expect our first-year students to be:

grown-up, "home alone,” indulged

group-oriented, likely to have brief encounters

technologically proficient than their parents,
teachers, and bosses

likely to work full or part-time

stressed and anxious

ambitious

rule-conscious

LESS...

emotionally mature

coupled

experienced in the discipline required for in-depth study

willing to sacrifice for a goal

focused

realistic about what it takes

interested in following rules

Today's students require highly effective first-year seminars that help them discover personal meaning, determine academic purpose, and develop the skills they need for success. The Seven Features of Highly Effective First-Year Seminars will help you develop or improve your first-year college success course for your own classroom and your institution as a whole. The day will be spent examining the seven features of Highly Effective FYSs in a highly innovative and interactive format that includes afternoon mini-workshops led by subject matter experts from within the group.

Registration Fee
The first three participants from an institution adopting a Wadsworth College Success text will attend the event for free.

Additional participants from that institution who are also adopting the text will pay a registration fee of $65 per person.

Participants not currently using one of our college success textbooks will pay $110 per person.

If there is a team of 6 or more from a single institution, they will pay $65 per person.
